Sample size for dry matter determination of sweetpotato storage roots

Significant differences were obtained in DM [dry matter] among varieties Miracle-Dingras (34.7-35.4 percent DM), Bureau (29.6-29.8 percent DM), BPI-SP2 (22.2-22.6 percent DM), VSP-6 (20.4-20.6 percent DM) and VSP-1 (19.3-20.4 percent DM). Both the 50 and the 100 g samples had the lowest and comparable standard errors and could be alternatively utilized in sampling. No significant differences in DM were obtained from either transversal or longitudinal sections. In the transversal section, the middle portion had lower DM but not significantly different to those of other portions. Hence, a middle transversal or longitudinal section and 50 or 100 g sample can be considered an acceptable sampling method in determining the dry matter content of sweetpotato storage roots. This allows for DM determination of large number of clones in the breeding program
