USM var 7: new high yielding yellow corn variety

The National Seed Industry Council has approved USM var 7 (Cn 94-51) as a commercial corn variety on July 30, 1994. USM var 7 is an open-pollinated yellow corn that is high yielding, corn borer and downy mildew resistant, and also drought tolerant. It is an improved version of USMARC 1188 from CIMMYT's population 28 DMR. The average yield of USM var 7 in 18 trials across the country is 6.25 t/ha, higher than the national check IPB Var 1 which is 5.71 t/ha (consolidated data, 1992-93); average plant height is 200 cm; ear height is 95 cm; 53 days to silking and matures 100-105 days after planting, weight of 1000 grains is 302.84 grams
