Effect of nitrogen doses (0, 60, 120, 180 kg/ha) on nitrate- and ammonium N contents in soil to 90 cm depth was studied in field experiments on light silty loam in 1987-88. Correlations among nitrate+ammonium N, sugar beet yield and quality were also determined. Increasing N doses up to 180 kg/ha increased gradually nitrate+ammonium N contents, mostly in 0-30 cm soil layer; highest mineral N contents were observed in June. The strongest correlation between mineral N content in soil and parameters of sugar beet yield was noted in July. Correlation coefficients decreased with increasing depth of soil layer, at the end of vegetation season and under dry conditions
