Expansive weeds - autopolyploids or amphidiploid hybrids

Segetal flora, including expansive weeds from a moderate climate region, is rich in polyploid species. This suggests their adaptative and evolutionary superiority over primary diploids. Cytogenetic investigations, however, reveal the amphidiploid nature of these polyploids. This is particularly true for those species which reproduce generatively. Their pecularities result from hybrid origin and doubling of chromosome number is a secondary feature indespensible for generative reproduction
