The concentration of Cu, Mn, Zn, Cd, Co, Pb and Ni was determined in the OF and OH layers of soils under a subalpine spruce forest in the Karkonosze Mountains, which indicated different stage of degradation (without any signs, a forest in the process of dying and a dead forest). Higher concentrations of Cu, Mn, Zn, and Co were found in ectohumus horizons under the degraded forest, while Pb, Cd and Ni concentrations did not indicate such relations. The content of the analysed heavy metals was not high enough to influence the degree of forest ecosystem degradation
