This paper identifies various types of integrated oil palm crop-animal systems and discusses research methodologies that were developed to improve animal production under mature and immature oil palms. These methodologies include improvement of natural forage productivity, cultivated legumes and forages, utilization of palm oil mill byproducts, the plantation environment, and animal productivity. Many new methods developed through research are still not widely practiced by the smallholders and estate workers in the oil palm-based integrated systems. To popularize the practice of new methods, communication methods and extension education need to be undertaken. Commercial plantations will also benefit should they assume this endeavor as their social responsibility. Future research possibilities and priorities are outlined
