The paper presents a separation method between the soil loading level with heavy metals and the soil pollution level with heavy metals, as well as the severity with which each measured element contributes to one or other condition. According to this method, the soil level loading with one or more heavy metals refers to any concentration of these chemical elements which is not immediately harmful to soil, plant or other components of the environment. On the other hand, the soil pollution level with heavy metals referes to any concentration harmful to the environmental components. In order to separate the two levels, the method defines and proposes to determinate a loading/pollution index (I 1/p). Subunitary index values characterize the soil loading range and superunitary index values - the pollution range. Each range is ranked between the intervals defining: very low (I 1/p 0.1), slight (0.1-0.25), moderate (0.26-0.50), severe (0.51-0.75) and very severe loading (0.75-1.00), and slight (1.1-2.0), moderate (2.1-4.0), severe (4.1-8.0), very severe (8.1-16.0) and excessive pollution ( 16.0), respectively. The loading/pollution index has been computed taking into account data obtained on soil samples from the Baia Mare polluted area, and the ranking of soil pollution classes has been established having also in view the pollution impact of heavy metals over the vegetation habitus, as well as the heavy metal plant content.
