Selected faunal assemblages (Orthoptera, Mantodea, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Aves) were investigated along a transect (464-1458 m a.s.l.) covering four generalized forest zones of the Polana Biosphere Reserve (central Slovakia). Vertical distribution of insects and birds is affected by a number of factors, of which the geographical position of the Polana massif, its geomorphology and substratum, and various anthropogenic impacts (mostly deforestation and pasturing) as well as species requirements play an important role. Results support the importance of this mountainous area in the international context
