Over 1991-1993, effects of the growth retarder Shorty on the morphological changes in plants and herbage yield were studied in a pot experiment using red clover (Trifolium pratense), meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and in a small-plot field trial on semi-natural grassland. On the plants treated with the retarder, there was an average 35 % decrease in assimilation area, also a decrease in leaf area index (LAI) and in the sward height when compared with the untreated control only. The retarder was applied during the phenological phase of grass tillering at the time of the first cut (25 May). After application, there was no earing of plants and the retardatory effect lasted about 50 days.
