Evaluation of the gene pool of exotic firs in parks of Slovakia
1994
Tokar, F. (Slovenska Akademia Vied, Nitra (Slovakia). Ustav Ekologie Lesa)
The paper evaluates the gene pool of 15 species of exotic firs in 298 parks in Slovakia from the viewpoint of their number, growth performance, stem quality, reproduction and potential value for forest management and horticulture. Abies grandis Lindl., Abies nordmanniana (Steven) Spach, Abies cephalonica Loud., Abies cilicica (Ant. et Kotschy) Carr. and Abies concolor (Gord.) Hild. are recommended for forestry practice. The aesthetic properties of all exotic fir species are excellent. If their biological and ecological requirements are respected, they can be successfully applied in horticulture. Information about the number and altitude of plantations (parks) and dendrometrical characteristics of individual species are presented in Table 2.
