Mathematical models for the computation of accidental pollution advancement

Four computer programs with different levels of schematization were developed to help cope with accidental water pollution. POSTUP calculates the progression of the pollution based on the assumption that it moves with the same velocity as the mean cross-sectional velocity of the stream. DISPA8 numerically solves in a one-dimensional schematization the advection-dispersion differential equation in a ramified stream system (the flow in which can be unstable). The values of concentration of the polluting matter at selected times and in selected sections of the ramified streams are given, and the output can be used for an animated image using DISGRAPH. DISPA8 was successfully calibrated with field measurements. KVA12, developed from DISPA8, also takes into account the first order of chemical reactions between oxygen and the biological oxygen demand of the polluting matter. KVAl3 (still under development) solves the problem in a so-called 1.5-dimensional schematization, taking into account transverse dispersion as well.
