Influence of various energy substitutions with fodder beet in raising of heifers on their weight growth and milk production after calving

Feed rations on the basis of silage maize and alfalfa with various levels of energy from fodder beet were fed in a group feeding experiment. One group was fed a ration with 20 % concentrate and 80 % roughage, out of which 15 % of the consumed dry matter was beet. The heifers calved at the age of 26.2 months, at l.w. 557 kg. The second group was fed a ration of 10 % concentrates and 90 % roughage, out of which 30 % was beet. The heifers in this group calved at the age of 26.5 months, at l.w. 550 kg. The nutrition level before calving was substantiated mainly from the viewpoint of finishing the growth and habituation of animals to a higher intake of roughage in both types of feeding. The first-calf-cows achieved an average daily production of 15.0 kg milk with 4.23 % fat (15.52 kg FCM) with 1st type of feed ration, and 16.45 kg milk, with 3.52 % fat (15.34 kg FCM) with 2nd type. Results showed that with good quality feeds the live weight gains, milk production and/or FCM were not negatively influenced up to 120 days after calving with the decrease of concentrate ratio and increase of proportional representation of fodder beet in the feed ration of heifers 6 months before calving.
