The application of hormonal preparations PMSG and HCG evokes a superovulatory effect in gilts. However, opinions on the optimal dose differ. Two groups of gilts at the age of 180 days and weight 80-90 kg were in the experiments. PMSG (Stugonal, Veterinarski zavod Subotica, YU) combined with 250 i.u. HCG (Chorulon, Intervet Boxmer) was applied intramuscullary in the first group (n=10 animals). The second group was applied 1500 i.u. PSMG combined with 500 i.u. HCG. The oocytes were aspirated 72 hours after HCG from slaughtered gilts and their developmental stage was evaluated. In the group treated with the higher dose of hormones the ovulatory response was significantly higher (x=27.7 CL/gilt vs. 10.8 CL/gilt). The number of oocytes was also higher (25.1 vs. 9.5/gilt). The evaluation of developmental stages showed that in the first group there were 88.4 % oocytes in metaphase II (Mf II), 4.6 % in the germinative vesicle stage (GV), and out of the total number 7 % oocytes were degenerated. In the second group 82.3 % oocytes were in MF II stage, 10.2 % in GV stage and 7.5 % were degenerated. The results showed that the increase dose of hormones increased significantly the superovulatory reaction and the number of recovered oocytes, without a significant difference in the stage of maturation.
