Light-microscopy observations have shown that structural changes in the mesophyll cells of Abies alba from autumn to spring depend on environmental temperature and are very dynamic. With decreasing temperature, a higher content of tannins and the formation of numerous small lipid bodies and larger globular vacuoles were observed. During the frost periods frost plasmolysis appeared and less resistant cells were injured. It is assumed that formation of numerous lipid bodies, fragmentation of the central vacuole into numerous small ones, and condensation of tannins are adaptative processes of frost resistant mesophyll cells during unfavourable temperatures. The large amount of starch grains in mesophyll cells of silver fir is a typical feature in spring.
