Genetic variation in five populations of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in Slovakia

Genetic variation of five silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) populations was investigated by assessing 15 isozyme loci. The mean observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.164 and 0.136, but no significant differences (P greater than 0.5) were found. The estimates of the genetic multiplicity, the genetic diversity and Nei's genetic distances were calculated as well. F-statistics based on the 11 polymorphic loci indicated that 98.5 % of total variation could be attributed to within population differences. Our results support the hypothesis of Larsen (1986) about the remigration of silver fir to its present area in Central Europe after the last glacial period.
