The economic situation of Suriname with its Structural Adjustment policy is briefly discussed. The agricultural exports and the dependence on imports for human consumption goods as well as feed components for animal feeds are dealt with. The labour market in the governmental, the private and the agricultural sector are discussed and the government policy towards agriculture and livestock is dealt with. In the end the prospects for the livestock sector and the role the government has to play in it is presented
