Hybrid breeding program of castor has been carried out since 1981. Female plants (Pistillate line-A1) was developed from the hybrid H78 which was introduced from South Africa. A1 has a short plant height and green in colour, waxy coating on stem fruit and vein (underneath the leaf), spiny and complex overley pattern on seed. It was crossed with male parents such as Lynn dwarf, Aruna, Baker tall typer and IAC-38. F1 hybrid from their crosses were tested for yielding ability and other agronomic characters in preliminary trials. Some promising hybrids were tested further in Standard, Regional and farm trials including farmtest with H22 a hybrid from Israel used as a standard check (1983-1989). Ubon-1, a hybrid between A1 and Baker tall type gave the average yield 199 kg/rai which was higher than H22 10 % Ubon-1 has a short plant height, red in colour, waxy coating on stem, fruit and vein. It earlier maturity, short spike and smaller seed than H22. The oil content was also higher than H22 as well.
