Influence of sweet corn seed vigors on growth, yield and optimum planting rate

Sweet corn seeds variety Thai Super Sweet Composite DMR no.1 were pretested at Seed Laboratory of Agronomy Department in order to obtain three vigor levels of seed namely high, medium and low. These three vigor seeds were field-tested at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center under various seeding rates. Medium and low vigor seeds would be prepared by aging of seeds for 4 days afterwhich they were open dried in the normal room for 2 and 3 days, respectively. High vigor seeds were seeds without any pretreatments of aging. High vigor seed was superior to those of medium and low vigor seeds on field emergence and plant growth judging from plant height, leaf area and plant dry weight. In order to obtain desirable plant numbers, the same numbers of seed should be dropped in case of high vigor seed while 1.5 and 2.0 times, greater than the desirable plant numbers, of seeds were suggested to plant when using medium and low vigor seeds, respectively.
