1993
Mathee Kaewnern
Oyster farmers in Amphoe Kanjanadit, Changwat Surat Thani, employ mainly the cement tube culture method, with a culture period of 19 to 24 months. The oyster spats are collected from the sea but, owing to the changes in the coastal environment and the tremendous rising demand of spate, the supply is inadequate. Therefore, the farmers have to buy small-sized oyster (2-3 cm) at 1 Baht per piece from hatcheries. From the study it was estimated that the culture area of oysters, number of cement tubes in use, cost of cement tubes and demand of spats in the study area were 1,055 rai;1,687,600 tubes;12,235,100 Baht; and 33,752,000 pieces per year, respectively. The initial investment and operating costs of oyster hatchery in first year for producing the 3 oysters were 1,207,565 Baht, of which 52.6 % was investment cost and 46.7 % was operating cost. The production cost of a 3 cm oyster at the survival rate of 8, 10 and 12 % was 0.51, 0.41 and 0.34 Baht, respectively. The feasibility study of oyster hatchery where the present value and analysis of the sensitivity of the project are concerned, the study showed a high net present value and internal rate of return. The benefit cost ratio was more than 1.5 at any survival rate. Hence, it can be concluded that investment on oyster hatcheries in the study area is feasible.
