Effectiveness of herbicides in pre-germinated direct-seed rice were studied at the Klong Luang Rice Experiment Station and Suphan Buri Rice Experiment Station in the 1988 and 1989 dry seasons. The trials were designed as randomized complete block with 4 replications and 15 treatments. The toxicity to rice, grade of weed control, kind and number, dry weight of weeds and yield of rice were recorded. The results of Klong Luang trial in 1988 indicated that the toxicity to rice from treated herbicides was small but effective weed control by thiobencarb, thiobencarb/2,4-D, piperophos/2,4-D and oxyfluorfen gave high rice yield level as 84, 82, 81, 80 tung/rai. The untreated rice yield was only 69 tung/rai. In 1989, the toxicity of all herbicides to rice was also small with high performance of weed control. Petrilachlor, thiobencarb, fenoxaprop-ethyl and metsulfuron-methyl treatments gave high rice yield of 79, 75, 74 and 73 tung/rai which were higher than untreated check (57 tung/rai). Results of trial at Suphan Buri in 1988, small injury to treated rice with effective weed control was found. The highest yields were obtained from fluroxypyr and thiobencarb treatments at 77 and 77 tung/rai which were higher than untreated check (48 tung/rai). In 1988, the results were almost the same in terms of toxicity to rice and weed control. Thiobencarb gave the maximum yield (54 tung/rai) while untreated check was minimum (18 tung/rai).
