Application of some cropping systems for soil and water conservation on some sloping land in Northeastern Thailand

7 methods which were as follows: 1) Sweet corn planting in contour bund line with cultivation 2) Sweet corn planting in contour bund without cultivation 3) Strip cropping by rotating sweet corn and cowpea every 2 years with cultivation 4) Strip cropping by rotating sweet corn and cowpea every 2 years without cultivation 5) Rotate strip cropping between corn and cowpea every year with cultivation 6) Rotate strip cropping between sweet corn and cowpea every year without cultivation 7) Fallow soil, the run off and soil loss from every treatment throughout the three years were not significantly different but the first treatment and the fallow soil tended to have the highest soil and water loss. On the contrary, the strip cropping between sweet corn and cowpea tended to lose soil and water the least. The strip cropping together with reducing cultivation could minimize soil and water loss. That was the most suitable method of crop and soil management to reduce soil erosion. The sweet corn yield in the second year in the strip cropping between sweet corn and cowpea tended to yield more than monocrop of corn. No tillage should increase soil moisture in strip cropping higher than mono cropping.
