Species composition and distribution of tuna larvae in the Andaman Sea
1990
Pattira Sawasdivorn (Department of Fisheries, Bangkok (Thailand). Oceanic Fisheries Div.)
Tuna larvae collected by th R/V Chulabhorn in the Andaman Sea during January-May 1988 were examined for species composition. A total of 23 samples were collected with plankton net at 13 stations. Three species of tuna larvae were indentified, namely frigate tuna (Auxis thazard), kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), Frigate tuna was the dominant species and was widely distributed throughout the area. Highest densities of frigate larvae occurred in January with 179 individuals per 1,000 cubic meter. Some environmental factors (temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen) were also investigated to study correlation with tuna larvae distributions and abundance.
