Macrobenthic fauna in Phangnga Bay were investigated during December 1985-December 1986. The benthic animals were bimonthly collected by rectangular dredge and sediment samples were taken by ven-Veen grab. The samples were obtained 7 times from 17 stations, ranging in depth of 5-26 meters. The sea bed of Phangnga Bay can be divided into 3 parts according to median particle diameter: Firstly, coarse sand dominates in the innermost part of the bay about 24 % of the study area, secondly medium sand is abundant in the central regions of the study area about 35 % of the area, thirdly fine sand dominates in outermost part of the bay about 41 % of the area. The organic content ranged from 3.7-11.8 %. The range of silt-clay content was 9-30 %. The benthic animals were comprised of 6 groups. The percentage occurrences of macrobenthic fauna were Crustacean 31.5, Echinoderm 26.7, Mollusc 23.9, Polychaete 9.1, Fish and Other Chordate 7.1 and Other group 1.7. The economically important species of macrobenthic fauna in Phangnga Bay were Paphia undulata, Metapenaeus ensis, M. moyebi and M. lysianassa. The mean density of macrobenthic fauna was 15 individuals per 100 square m. The maximum abundance of macrobenthic fauna was in the innermost part of the west bank of Phangnga Bay.
