Utilization of sunflower seed as soybean meal substitution in animal feed

Utilization of sunflower seed (SFS) as a source of protein and energy to substitute soybean meal (SBM) and corn in animal feed was studied. It involved chemical analysis, evaluation of protein quality in rat, determination of metabolizable energy (ME) in poultry, digestibility as well as feeding trials in poultry and pig. The SFS used was a blended sample of hybrid lines, HCM 1-5 and Hysun, that contained 20.8 % crude protein (CP), 40.7 % ether extract (EE), 15.1 % crude fiber, 4.4 % ash and 19.0 % nitrogen free extract (NFE). Essential amino acids in the seed amounted to approximately 1/3 of SBM with the exception of lysine which was lower. Digestibility of nutrients in laying hen and pig was 59.3 and 72.7 % respectively for dry matter, 62.1 and 73.0 % for organic matter, 44.3 and 87.8 % for CP, 86.2 and 76.7 % for EE and 63.8 and 73.8 % for NFE. In layer ME amounted to 3.868 kcal/g. Feeding trial in layer revealed that ME of the diet when adjusted to the same level as the control group, SFS could substitute 80 % of SBM, that equals to 18.8 % of SFS in the diet. For the unadjusted ME in the diet of broiler SFS could be utilized as high as 50 % of the ration. Feed conversion ration also improved with increased SFS level due to its high energy content. On the other hand it could be used only 10 % in Japanese quail or 20 % in swine diet at growing-finishing period without adverse effect on swine growth and carcass quality.
