Eight American commercial hybrids were evaluated for their potential to improve grain yield of the elite hybrid Mo 17 x L62. The best donor hybrid for grain yield improvement, on the basis of all three applied methods, was Palma. All investigated hybrids were shown to be more genetically related to the inbred parent L62 by the relation: (P2xD)-(P1xD)+(P1-P2)/2 (Dudley, 1987). Very strong agreement between the applied methods for evaluation of favourable alleles was obtained. These results suggest the possibility of applying the mean of crosses of a donor hybrid to both parents of the elite single cross method alone, as it required the lowest number of entries, i.e. it is the most reasonable one
