Effect of imazethapyr on corn seed germination

Imazethapyr is a herbicide used in soybean and other leguminous crops for weed control. Corn is often planted in rotation following soybean. Rotational crop safety to herbicide residues in soil is of broad concern. In this paper, the effect of different imazethapyr concentrations on corn seed germination was evaluated. The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions. Petri dish method was used. Root and shoot length, seedlings fresh weight and free proline content were measured. Probit analysis evaluation method showed high dependency of root and shoot growth inhibition on herbicide concentrations. The results pointed out the direct relationship between increase of free proline content and herbicide concentration.
