Chemical control of the beech aphid Phyllaphis fagi

Foliar applications of two systemic insecticides, imidacloprid and acetamiprid, were tested on one-year-old beech (Fagus sylvatica). Their efficacy was compared with the control achieved with triazofos and propoxur. Imidacloprid was also tested as a foliar application in seedlings and as a seed treatment at different rates. The results show that in 1994 and in 1995 imidacloprid at field applications of 0.07 g a.i. per litre controlled Phyllaphis fagi much better than triazofos or propoxur. Acetamiprid applied at 0.1 g a.i. per litre achieved even better control. The seed treatment with imidacloprid was 12.6 g a.i. per kg seed in 1994 and was reduced to 0.35 g a.i. per kg seed in 1995. The latter application controlled Phyllaphis fagi sufficiently throughout the entire growing season and represents a significant reduction in the active ingredient used per hectare. This study demonstrates that chloronicotinyls will be very important for controlling Phyllaphis fagi when authorized for use on nursery stock
