Several African Sub-Saharan countries within the subhumid zone have high agropastoral potentialities yet underexploited as a result of glossina transmitted animal trypanosomosis. In the face of a population increase and possible reduction of food availability, an accelerated agricultural development is a prerequisite as well as combating against trypanosomosis. Control strategies and planning of related activities are analysed. Emphasis is on glossina control and available technical tools are described, including the use of screens, targets and cattle treatment by pour on formulations of pyrethroids. Present control techniques are environmentally sound and give higher opportunity for community participation which is more suitable for sustainable land recovery. Training needs for technical staff and livestock breeders and institutional aspects related to control programmes are briefly discussed; coordination mechanisms and proposals are made
