Estonia is reckoned to be among the countries richest in peatlands in Northern Europe. Mires cover some 22.3 per cent of the republic's area (Orru, 1992). Formation of mires started soon after the territory of Estonia was freed of ice cover, first in Upper and somewhat later in Lower Estonia. The monograph presents an overview of the peat research history, reports on the quantity and quality of peat resources. The total area of mires is 1,009,101 hectares. Of 1626 peat deposits, 520 are large mires with a thick layer of peat which are of major significance in a number of respects, including commercial and agricultural use, nature conservation. The remaining, 1106 peat deposits are mostly fens with a thin layer of peat. Estonia's total peat resources are estimated at 2.37 milliard tons, of which active (economically exploitable) resources constitute 1.52 millliard tons. The present handbook focuses on 520 mires of major significance in Estonia, which are dealt by counties
