Luik, A. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Inst. of Plant Protection)
For the development of environmentally sustainable plant protection methods, it is important to know how phytophagous insect selects a host plant and how it is possible to interrupt this natural process. In the present book Chapter 1 briefly describes the compounds (main nutrients as well as secondary metabolites) which are responsible for plant specifity and how the content of compounds can vary. Plant chemistry is key to many plant-insect interactions. Chapter 2 gives an outline of the sensory systems (sense of taste, smell, touch and sight) involved in the insect's perception of plants. Chapter 3 describes the insect behaviour process in the host-plant selection. In Chapter 4 it has been shown how to use different plant compounds to affect the behaviour, developmetn and survival of insects. More thoroughly the data on the influence of water extracts of some Estonian plants on cabbage butterfly and pine weevil have been given
