A field experiment was conducted to test two cultivars of winter triticale and one cultivar of winter wheat with ten sowing dates in 1995. The aim of this experiment was to find out the influence of the sowing date on the overwintering, yield and chemical composition of triticale. It turned out that, starting from the September 12 sowings, no great differences were revealed between the overwintering of triticale and wheat. Earlier sowings showed worse overwintering. Triticale was more capable of shooting than wheat and could thus compensate for yield losses in hard winters. Seed yield was in close correlation to sowing dates, being higher in mid-September sowings. Triticale cultivars showed a very high yield potential. The ash and N-free extractives content of triticale was higher than of wheat, but the protein, crude fibre and ether extract content of wheat was higher than of triticale
