The activities of the Hungarian vegetable oil industry are of major importance for the agriculture of the country for following reasons: * raw materials, i. e. oil plants, are grown on approximately 450 thousand hectares, which means that their sowing area takes the third place (after wheat and maize) among field crops; * their yield, amounting to approximately 800-900 thousand tons per year, constitutes the basis of the manufacture of vegetable oils, margarines and cooking fats which ensure sound nutrition and also play an important role in exports, in addition to which their parts free from oil (cakes) can be used for animal feeding. Under the conditions of increasing competition on the market (taking also the effects of EU accession into consideration) the Hungarian vegetable oil industry will only be capable of keeping or even increasing its role in domestic supply and exports if it can be economically and safely manufacture products of such a good quality as is required by the market
