Rapid economic and population growth in ASEAN countries have resulted in heavy use of tropical forest resources over time. A number of these countries have a large population of rural poor that depends on forest lands either for subsistence farming or to supplement their meager income. ASEAN government agencies have currently shifted their forest policies from regulatory to development-oriented in approach. They try to integrate forest communities in forest management and conservation programmes. There are a number of issues related to the use for and availability of social forestry data that emanate from the following: (a) lack of understanding of what constitutes social forestry data; and (b) the concept that social attributes are less important than timber production
