Effectiveness of some communication channels on environmental conservation in Laguna de Bai, Philippines
1997
Jesudas Mapa
The main findings of this study show that the personal experience and television relays were the major sources of information about environmental degradation in Laguna area [Philippines]. People were more concerned about their economic conditions, than the environment or social, political issues. Religion was their least concern. They were well aware of the seriousness of the environmental problem, but the level of information communicated through the communication channels was low. Radio, television and newspaper were considered to become effective channels for the dissemination of the environmental information, but at present they were not because they were assessed to be giving less importance to the environmental issues and had poor presentation at unimportant (odd) time. People were enthusiastic and were ready to conserve the resources, especially water, provided the major pollutants were to be identified and penalized. For that, it was suggested that the government should structure a strong strategy policy, put up a continuous campaign and provide environmental education through the common communication channels. Respondents' main choices of solution to save the Laguna de Bay in order of priority included, (1) respondents discouraging themselves from throwing garbage into the lake, (2) strict surveillance over factories and manufacturing companies that discharge industrial and chemical waste into the bodies of water, and (3) regularly providing the water pollution related information to the constituents of Laguna de Bay watershed through the radio, television and print media on prime time and prominent places and simple languages
