A field experiment was conducted to evaluate use efficiency of applied nitrogen (in bulk or splits) to the spring planted maize crop on a sandy clay loam soil, using Randomized Complete Block Design. The results revealed that number of cob bearing plants/plot, plant height, 1000-grain weight and grain yield were affected significantly by different nitrogen application strategies. Maximum grain yield (5376.4 kg/ha) was recorded in treatment where nitrogen was applied in two splits (1/2 N at sowing and remaining 1/2 N applied 42 days after sowing at knee high stage).
