The general objective of the study was to provide benchmark information and time series data on the industrial uses of corn by the organized industrial sector of the country. The study utilized the data collected from the 1988 Census of Establishments (CE) and the 1989, 1990 and 1991 Annual Survey of Establishments of the National Statistics Office (NSO) to generate statistics on the industrial uses of corn in the country. Based on the 1991 ASE, of the 146 corn processing establishments, 49 percent were engaged in the manufacture of prepared feeds for animals and fowls, 21 percent in corn milling and 11 percent in the manufacture of snack products. Seventy-one percent purchased corn grain primarily for the manufacture of animal feeds and secondarily for wet milling, 26 percent purchased corn grits for food manufacturing and for wet milling and 4.6 percent purchased germ for the manufacture of corn oil. At the national level, the estimated volume of corn purchased by corn processing establishments over the 4-year period from 1988 to 1991 were 668, 627, 694, and 668 thousand metric tons accounting for 15.1, 13.0, 14.3 and 14.6 percent of the total corn production, respectively. Trends in volume purchases of corn grain for animal feeds were increasing but volume purchases for corn milling were declining. Using the establishments in the 1991 ASE as a sampling frame, a survey of 65 corn-processing establishments showed that 70.4 percent m of the corn grain purchased were yellow corn used mainly for the manufacture of animal feeds and dry milling, and 29.3 percent were white corn used for wet and dry milling. Prices paid for yellow corn were higher, average daily stock position was lower, and stocking period was longer than for white corn. Corn traders were the main source of yellow and white corn. Prices paid by the establishings were lower from traders than from farmers
