DNA for 18 strains of Pseudomonas solanacearum were analyzed using probes developed from a cosmid bank of PSO1000, a biovar 3 strain causing bacterial wilt of eggplant. The two biovar 2 strain differed significantly from the biovar 3 and 4 strains. Almost always, no DNA fragment from biovar 5 hybridized with the probes used. If hybridization was present, hybridization occurred in different fragment size. Within the biovar 3 strains, polymorphism was also evident. Biovar 4 strains were almost similar to the Biovar 3 strains. The probes that were developed maybe useful in identifying and detecting field isolates of P. solanacearum
