NACA/BFAR [Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia and the Pacific/Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Quezon City, Philippines] - assessment of phycocolloid properties from wild species of Gracilaria sp.
1994
Anon.
The study aims to provide information on Gracilaria sp. and its economic importance, which is necessary to evaluate its agar-yielding capacity and phycocolloid properties. Gracilaria samples were collected from areas of Hinatuan del Norte; Pagbilao, Quezon; Pangasinan; Batangas; Bohol; Samar; Leyte; Maqueda Bay; Buguey, Cagayan; and Surigao del Sur [Philippines]. The species identified were: G. fastigiata, G. firma, G. heteroclada, G. changii, G. temistipitata and G. salicornia. Seaweeds harvested from the wild were sorted, cleaned, coded, and dried for processing. There were 83 agar extractions made from wild species of Gracilaria which were treated with 5 percent alkali and cooked for three hours at 90 deg F. There were 105 agar samples analyzed for quality to determine their agar yield, percentage of moisture content, gel strength, temperatures for melting and gelling, and percentage of sulfate content. Results of the analysis showed that agar extracted from the tested species could be used for specialized agar products in the food industry and as microbiological culture media for agarose production
