[Incidence of the corn borer pest and resistance to Sesamia nonagrioides in sweet corn in Galicia] | Incidencia de la plaga de taladro y resistencia a Sesamia nonagrioides en el maiz dulce en Galicia

Velasco Pazos, P.
The sweet corn in Galicia is affected by corn borers. Due to the recent introduction of sweet corn in Europe, little research has been done on the resistance to pest in this crop. The objectives were to study the incidence of corn borers on sweet corn and the relative importance of corn borer species, the evaluation of the resistance of the different genotypes of sweet corn to the attack of Sesamia and a first approach to the study of the inheritance. For the first goal, six sweet corn hybrids were evaluated under natural infestation and different dates of sowing. For the evaluation of the resistance, hybrids and inbreds of sweet corn were infested with eggs of Sesamia. The infestations were made into the tip of the silk channel of the main ear and between the shank of the main ear and the stem. The proportion of Sesamia nonagrioides and Ostrinia nubilalis in the ears was similar. When the plants were artificially infested, differences in the resistance among the genotypes of sweet corn were found. The sweet corn inbred lines EP59, H1, H3, I5125 and IL767b showed a good level of resistance with the two methods of infestation. The most resistant hybrids were formed by inbred lines that showed some level of resistance. The inheritance of resistance seems to be basically additive with some dominance involved, but a more serious research would be needed to estimate the inheritance of the characters.
