Identifying the most limiting factor(s) in maize yield at Kisongo Area, Arusha Region (Northern Tanzania)

Fertility X variety and fertility X plant population were interactions that statistically showed significance. Grain yield from CG4141 and Katumani with 60 kg N/ha, and from CG4141 without fertilizer were statistically similar but significantly different from Katumani without fertilizer. CG4141 did not respond to fertilizer probably because the amount of fertilizer applied was not sufficient for CG4141 but was for Katumani. The grain yield at the recommended population of 44,000 plants/ha with 60 kg N/ha was significantly higher than grain yield from 44,000 plants/ha without fertilizer and 35,000 plants/ha with and without fertilizer. Also, there was a statistically significant difference in grain yield between the two populations without fertilizer. Grain yield of the plots without fertilizer was lower for the recommended population than yields of the underseeded population. This was attributed to increased inter -plant competition plant for the limited N source as the plant density increased.
