Some observations on the reproductive performance of Saanen buck maintained under the climatic conditions of Khartoum [Sudan]

Six mature (2 years) Saanen bucks imported from the Netherlands for upgrading of local Sudanese goats were used in this study. The experiment was designed to investigate the effect of climate and seasons on the mating behavior and semen characteristics. Semen was collected by an Artificial Vagina (AV) at weekly intervals and criteria such as ejaculate volume, spermatozoa motility, concetration and percentage of dead and abnormal sperm cells were monitored. The Saanen bucks were found to have a definite breeding season (early autumn to winter). Libido was significantly higher (p less than or 0.05) in autumn with an average value of 61,98 sec. The semen was characterized by an ejaculate volume of 0.77ml, concentration of 2.77x10'9 sperm cells/ml, mass activity score of 3.19, 68.7 sperm cells were active, 15.49 were dead and 8.56 had abnormal morphology. The season affected all seminal characteristics quantified except the volume and mass activity. Nevertheless, when the libido allowed repeated successive ejaculates in autumn, the pooled volume was highly significant (p 0.01). The poorest quality semen was collected during summer with highest incidence of abnormalities (11.61) and highest incidence of dead sperm cells (19.32). However, the magnitude of these seasonal effects were not sufficient to prevent the bucks being used for breeding throughout the period of sexual activity
