The role of forestry extension in the development and management of communal and farm forestry in Yemen [Yemen]

The objective of the present study is to assess the effectivness of the forestry extension and other forestry activities in motivating the local people (farmers and rural women) to participate in the process of tree planting, environmental protection and forest management. Extension workers, rural women and formers perception of extension methodologies and the level of rural women and farmers awareness about forestry and their adoption to forestry activities, provieded the criteria for the assessment of forestry extension effectiveness. The study was based on structured interviews and questionnaires carried out within extension workers, rural women and farmers. A 100 representeation of the extension workers was achieved while a representative sample was drawn from the rural women and farmers using a sysematic sampling procedure. The research design ivolved in the first part data collection on target groups demographic charachtaristics. The second part concentrated on identification and assessment of the perception of extension workers, rural women and farmers on selected aspects of forestry programs activities and extension. The third part involved evaluation of the level of awareness and extent of participation in forestry activities and forest management. A set of conclusions and recommendations were presented based on the study findings
