Over two years (1994-1996) the possibility of growing Secale cereale f. multicaule Metzg. was studied at Liptovska Teplicka (altitude 950 m) in the Low Tatra mountains (Slovak Republic). Some production traits were investigated and grain was analysed chemically. High variability was observed in the length of stems and ears. These traits and also the number of ears were also the most diverse when the trial years are compared. Over the years, there were minimum differences in the number of grains per ear (average = 47.9) and in thousand grain weight (average = 20.7 g). The number of ears per area unit determined grain yield. Secale cereale f. multicaule Metzg. might yield about 4.0 t/ha of grain. It was concluded that this plant could be grown in climatically marginal conditions. Consequently, more opportunity is provided to keep the plant in the gene pool of Slovakia
