Monitoring of fluorine in foodstuffs within the district of Ziar nad Hronom from 1986-1997
1998
Schwarz, M. (Statny Zdravotny Ustav, Ziar nad Hronom(Slovak Republic))
Results of fluorine monitoring in food products according to the region of their origin are summarized. In the contaminated district of Ziar nad Hronom, over-limit contents of fluorine in potatoes and in meat and meat products were observed, while the fluorine contents in the other commodities (with the exception of tea) were below the maximum limit values. The values of fluorine content in air, exceeding the limit value, are considered. In drinking water the maximum limit value was not exceeded. Dietary habits of the population (excessive consumption of tea, smoking, eating of fluorinated toothpastes by children, etc.) seem to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of diseases induced by increased fluorine levels, especially in the contaminated regions. A significant decrease in the number of samples exceeding maximum hygiene limit values of fluorine is evident
