[Production and sale of potatoes in Slovakia]

Potato production and quality depends on storage capacities, growing acreage, harvest machinery, and hectare yields. Potato acreages increased by 40.8 ths hectares in Slovakia over 1995. The total potato production was 776.6 ths tons from average hectare yields of 19.02 tons. In the marketing year (1 Sep 1995-31 Aug 1996) the total volume of imported potatoes reached 72,608 ths tons and exported potatoes only 172.8 tons. The purchase prices of the early potatoes averaged 9.30 SKK kg** (-1), of the other consumable potatoes 6.84 SKK kg** (-1) and the purchase prices of potaoes for industrial processing were 2.50 SKK kg** (-1). The consumer prices of early potatoes were 10.28 SKK kg** (-1) and 10.48 SKK kg** (-1) for other potatoes
