Protected natural creation "Pukanec black mulberries"
1994
Kralik, J. | Rosenberger, J.
The territory of Pukanec with its sheltered location under the south slopes of the Stiavnica hills (Slovakia) has very good conditions for growing the most demanding fruit trees or either domestic or foreign origin (grape vine, white mulberry, black mulberry, apricot, peach, quince, service tree, European chestnut, medlar). Among these of foreign origin black mulberry is distinguished by its excellent fruit. Since Pukanec with its approximately 500 yield-bearing trees of between 200 and 350 years of age represents at present the largest locality of its type on the territory of both the Czech and Slovak Republics, these mulberry trees were in 1988 declared a protected natural creation called "Pukanec black Mulberries". The origin, range and taxonomy of mulberry trees around the world and history of the Pukanec stand is described, and the chemical composition of the fruit is analysed
