Weight of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.) larvae developed on different maize inbred lines
1997
Cagan, L.
In 1991 and 1992, weight of European corn borer larvae (ECB, Ostrinia nubilalis ) on different inbred maize lines was observed near Nitra (Slovakia). Seventeen inbred lines (8 inbred lines from Slovakian maize breeding and 9 inbred lines from the world sortiment), varying in resistance to ECB were observed. The weight of ECB larvae developed on different lines was not significantly different under natural infestation. However, significant differences were detected in the weight of larvae developed on different maize genotypes in trials with artificial infestation. In 1991, significant correlations between the weight of the larvae and the resistance of the line were found in experiments using both natural and artificial infestation. In 1992, the same correlations were not found. This suggests that selection based on the weight of ECB larvae will not guarantee higher resistance
