The soil nematode structure was compared in three regions of Slovakia with different pollution intensities. Differences were found in the occurrence of trophic groups in relation to the emission type and distance from pollution source. The F/B ratio (fungal and bacterial feeders ratio) showed dominance of bacterial feeders in the alkaline emission type region (Jelsava) while fungal feeders were more associated with the acid emission type region (Krompachy). Maturity index (MI) indicated that localities in the alcaline region were more disturbed than those in the acid emission region in comparison with regions where the emission effect is low. In all localities a high proportion of plant parasite nematodes was recorded, represented mostly by Helycotylenchus spp. The highest population density of omnivores and predators was found in less polluted localities
