Seed yield and quality of coriander as affected by planting date and storage condition

Coriander seeds were sown at Kasetsart University, Kamphaengsaen Campus, on September 15, October 1, October 15, November 1, November 15, December 1, December 15, 1990 and January 1, 1991. Plant growth and days to flowering were affected by planting date. The height at flowering were 34.5, 39.4, 33.4, ,32.3, 28.9, 17.4 and 17.7 centimetres, respectively. Days to flowering were obtained at 67, 68, 68, 55, 54, 50, 49 and 50 days after sowing, respectively. And days to harvest were also obtained at 114, 122, 107, 107, 103, 94, 93 and 81 days after sowing, respectively. Seeds reached their physiological maturity at 24 days after anthesis (DAA) (September 15 to October 15, planting dates) and 21 DAA (November 1 to January 1). The highest germination percentages were obtained at 30 DAA (September 15 and October 1), 27 DAA (October 15, November 1 and December 15), 33 DAA (November 15 and December 1) and 21 DAA (January 1). The highest seed yield (10.8 g/plant) and quality were also obtained from plant grown on 15 October and mainly from the second and third umbel order. Seeds from all planting dates were dormant and overcome after 3-5 month storage. Seeds from the September 15 to November 15, planting dates, were then kept in aluminum foil, paper and plastic bags at 10, 20 and room temperature (25 - 35 deg C ). The seeds from the September 15 and October 1, planting dates, kept in plastic and aluminum bag at room temperature gave the highest germination percentage throughout 12.5 months of storage. Protein, carbohydrate and crude fat content decreased faster at high temperature than low temperature. Coriander seed germination and speeds of germination were improved when soaking in water for 3 and 7 days, respectively. Surface dry (80 % SMC) of primed seed in PEG 8000 solution exhibited the higher germination percentage and speed of germination than air dry (8 % SMC). Primed seed in PEG -1.0 MPa could be kept for 7 days with the highest germination percentage.
