Comparison and inheritance of pod quality in crosses between yardlong bean and cowpea

Pramote Pornsuriya
In order to compare and study genetic inheritance on pod quality and yield three parents of yard long bean and cowpea were crossed; and the F1, F2 progenies and backcrosses were obtained. It is expected to create new variations of vegetable bean with better pod firmness and high yield for export as frozen product. The diallel cross without reciprocals was made among three parental lines, KU8 (yardlong bean), B1 and IT86D - 325 (cowpea). The comparison of parents and their F1, F2 progenies on pod quality and yield showed that B1 gave the highest fresh and frozen pod firmness but low yield, KU8 gave high yield but rather low pod firmness, while IT86D - 325 was the lowest in both yield and pod firmness. All crosses showed heterosis in number of pods and pod weight per plant. A study on the genetic inheritance in a cross of KU8 * B1 using backcross mating design. The results showed that variation due to additive gene action was found on all studied characters. Dominant gene action was significant in some characters. Considering their narrow-sense heritabilities, there were rather highly heritable in fresh pod firmness, pod length, flowering date, number of pods/plant and pod weight/plant. There were medium and rather low heritabilities in frozen pod firmness and fiber content of fresh pod, respectively.
